Dear Warriors and Families,

As the new school year approaches, we’re here to support you with essential tips to ensure a smooth transition for students with sickle cell disease. This week, we focus on preparing for the school year with practical advice to help manage health needs and set up for success.

Back To School

We got your back, Warriors!

1. Essential Back-to-School Health Checklist

Starting a new school year requires a bit of extra preparation for our sickle cell warriors. Here’s a comprehensive checklist to help you get ready:

- Medical Appointments:  Schedule any necessary doctor visits, including routine check-ups and specialist appointments.

- Vaccinations: Ensure that your child is up-to-date on all required vaccinations.

- Medications: Review and refill any medications needed for the school year. Prepare a list of medications and dosages.

- Emergency Contacts: Update emergency contact information and provide it to the school nurse.

- Medical Documentation: Gather and provide any necessary medical documentation to the school.

*Download our [Back-to-School Health Checklist] to keep track of all these essentials.*

2. Creating an Effective Health Plan for School

An effective health plan can make a significant difference. Here’s how to create one:

- Meet with the School Nurse: Arrange a meeting to discuss your child’s specific health needs and any necessary accommodations.

- Outline Medical Needs: Clearly outline your child’s medical needs, including signs of pain, treatment protocols, and emergency procedures.

- Develop a Communication Plan: Set up a plan for regular communication between you and school staff regarding your child’s health.

For detailed guidance, read our article on [Creating an Effective Health Plan].

3. Packing the Perfect Backpack

Help your child stay prepared and comfortable with a well-packed backpack:

- Hydration: Include a reusable water bottle to keep your child hydrated throughout the day.

- Snacks: Pack healthy snacks that are easy to manage and help with energy levels.

- Medication: If necessary, include a small, clearly labeled container for medications.

- Comfort Items: Add any comfort items that can help manage stress or pain, like a favorite small toy or soothing music.

You must always stay prepared.

Make sure you pack what is needed daily. Use your voice. Speak Out!
