It’s Week 2 of Sickle Cell Awareness Month! This week, we’re taking a closer look at the reality of living with sickle cell disease (SCD). There are many misconceptions about what life is like for those with SCD, and today, we’re debunking some of the most common myths to help shed light on the truth.

Here is another Myth and Fact about Sickle Cell Disease.

Here’s a MYTH!

People with sickle cell disease can’t live a normal life.

Here is a FACT!

While sickle cell disease presents unique challenges, many individuals with SCD lead full, active lives with proper management and care.

Living with sickle cell disease requires a comprehensive approach to health, including regular medical check-ups, pain management strategies, and lifestyle adjustments. But these challenges do not define the lives of those with SCD. Many sickle cell warriors pursue careers, raise families, and engage in activities they are passionate about. With advancements in treatment and increased awareness, the quality of life for those with SCD is steadily improving.

Meet Stella, a sickle cell warrior and a very good friend of mine, who has successfully balanced her career, family life, and managing her health. In her words: “Sickle cell is a part of me, but it doesn’t define me. I’ve learned to listen to my body, stay proactive about my health, and surround myself with a strong support system. There are tough days, but they don’t stop me from living my life.”

Myth:

Sickle cell disease only affects physical health.

Fact:

Sickle cell disease not only affects physical health but it can also impact mental and emotional health and making a holistic approach to care essential.


The chronic pain and fatigue associated with sickle cell disease can take a toll on a person’s mental health. Anxiety, depression, and stress are common among individuals with SCD, yet these aspects are often overlooked. Addressing mental health is just as important as managing physical symptoms. Therapy, support groups, and mindfulness practices can be vital tools in coping with the emotional aspects of living with SCD.
